DESCRIPTION:Traditions\, Taste and Tunes is a meaningful Memorial Day weekend tradition in Columbus\, Mississippi\, bringing the community together for a blend of remembrance\, celebration\, and small-town charm. \nThe weekend begins Friday morning with the Placement of Flags at Sandfield Cemetery at 9:00 a.m. Following the placement of flags is a dedication of a WWI Memorial at the Lowndes County Courthouse at 11 a.m. That evening\, the Riverwalk Stage comes alive from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with live music by Artistik Band\, creating a lively backdrop for an evening along the water. Guests can enjoy a variety of food vendors\, family-friendly kids’ activities\, and a special flyover that adds a patriotic touch to the evening’s festivities. Attendees are encouraged to bring their personal lawn chairs. \nOn Saturday\, the spirit of remembrance continues as the American Legion places flags at Friendship Cemetery at 8:00 a.m.\, followed by a ceremony at 10:00 a.m. honoring the sacrifices of service members. \nWhether you’re gathering with family\, enjoying live music by the river\, or taking part in time-honored traditions\, Traditions\, Taste and Tunes offers a heartfelt and memorable way to spend Memorial Day weekend in Columbus. \nEvents: \nFriday\, 9 am – Placement of Flags at Sandfield Cemetery \nFriday\, 11 am – Dedication of WWI Memorial at Lowndes County Courthouse \nFriday\, 4:00-7:00 pm – Traditions\, Taste and Tunes; live music\, food\, and kids activities at the Riverwalk Stage \nSaturday\, 8:00 – Placement of flags at Friendship Cemetery\, followed by a ceremony at 10:00 am honoring the sacrifices of our armed forces

Primary and secondary document research by students in the MSMS African American History class as well as Mr. Yarborough is utilized in public performances recounting the history and contributions of the local African American community during the late 19th and early 20th century. \nIn recent years\, students from Columbus High School\, Columbus Middle School and MS University for Women have joined MSMS students in performances.​ \nThe 8th of May is the date the possibility of freedom came to Columbus and the surrounding area and when slavery for thousands of area African Americans was finally ended.  On this date in 1865\, Union troops arrived from Alabama and effectively freed the enslaved in Columbus and Lowndes County – a group that made up the majority of the population of this region as well as the majority of the state. \nThe program is sponsored by The Mississippi School for Math and Science\, Mississippi University for Women\, City of Columbus\, the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System\, Visit Columbus MS\, Columbus Municipal School District\, and Friendly City Books. \nTo learn more about the “Eighth of May Emancipation Celebration” visit https://themsms.org/8th-of-may-emancipation-celebration. \nFor more information\, contact Chuck Yarborough at 662-329-7670 or cyarborough@themsms.org.

DESCRIPTION:Colorful\, scribbled drawings displayed on the family refrigerator or similar surface are a common sight in homes with small children. A Child’s View displays children’s art to view the artwork in a different light. Drawings like these are often seen as a fun pastime for the child artist\, but as Georgia Love Graham\, director of the university’s Child and Parent Development Center (CPDC)\, says\, these creative activities are crucial in developing a child’s pre-writing skills and bolstering their confidence.
